What is a Holter Monitor Testing?

A Holter monitor is a portable device that continuously records the heart's electrical activity (ECG) over a specified time period. It is worn on the chest with electrodes attached to the skin, allowing doctors to detect irregular heart rhythms or other heart issues that may not be captured during a brief in-office ECG.

What are the restrictions when wearing a Holter Monitor?

When wearing a Holter monitor, patients are typically advised to follow these restrictions to ensure accurate results:

  1. Avoid water: Do not shower, bathe, or swim while wearing the Holter monitor as it may damage the device. We suggest wiping your body for the duration of the test.

  2. Avoid heavy exercise: Refrain from strenuous activities or exercises that could cause excessive sweating or movement of the monitor.

  3. Limit skin contact: Avoid wearing tight clothing or anything that might rub against the monitor electrodes.

  4. Be mindful of electrode wires: Take care not to pull or tug on the wires connected to the electrodes.

Your healthcare provider may provide specific guidelines based on your condition and the type of monitor used.
